Possibly mising usb drivers.. that's the most likely.. look in device manager and see if anything has a yellow question mark against it.

Missing drivers or a conflict with drivers... doubtful it is faulty hardware as they work during install.

back to device manager and look to see if the actual usb ports are listed along with the usb root hub. If they are try disable then enable device.. if that doesn't work try update drivers from device manager.. if that doesn't work note the error and post back.. You will probably have to go searching for manufacturers hardware drivers to install them.

Did you try my other suggestion??.. I'm reasonably psychic, but not at 4am.

Ok.. lets review.. your usb mouse works.. all the time?

That apple thing will need the right drivers installing for it to be recognised no doubt.. as for an external hdd.. your guess is as good as mine.. I don't use them. Could be picky on the drive format, duff cable.. not enough power to run a hdd in that enclosure, or way too many variables to guess at.

Hadn't thought of that. Try a basic USB device. Try a USB mouse, or a thumbdrive.
