I record saved content directly from my Dish HD DVR 722 to my standalone LG DVD recorder and get near DVD quality discs. Perfectly legal and explained tutorial in my Dish 722 manual. Also paid Dish (one time fee about $35.00) to activate the USB ports to transfer content to external harddrive. Put that in your smoke and pipe it cable and Direct TV.

that sounds like it may be the easiest way, was your computer able to read what you downloaded to your external drive? with out having to recode and all that? thanks for the reply.

This is where it's going to get interesting. The DVR has a 128 gig harddrive that will store 55 hours of HD content or hundreds of hours of non-HD content or a combination of both upto tthe 128 gig limit. I have all my music, pictures, and saved DVD .iso files on my current external harddrive so I didn't want to mess around connecting that one to the DVR. I ordered a new 750 gig harddrive (max. allowable) from Amazon which should arrive by mail tomorrow. That's when the fun begins because Dish told me my PC won't read it after the DVR formats it but the independent installer told me that they're full of crap and his PC reads the harddrive without dinking around. I just want to find out if it's possible. With a 750 gig external and the 128 gig internal drives I don't really anticipate a need to connect directly to my PC seeing that I can burn to disc with my standalone DVD recorder. But I can't wait to play with my new harddrive.

The way I do it, because I do not want to have 100's of DVDs + I want the AC3 and HD. I also have a PC by my TV and use it as a server. Loaded it up with plenty of storage, and also use the SATA hot swap pull outs, just so I it will be unlimited.

If you are interested in AC3 and HD also (up to 1080i) check out this thread:
