Is it possible that a dvd writer on a computer will not write on different brands on purpose.

I have a writer that writes fine on sony but when I use a different brand I almost always get a coaster.

Some drive manufacturers web sites provide a list of media that the drive will recognize.
This information is included in the drive firmware (sometimes can be updated).
The firmware uses this information to provide a 'strategy' to burn the disk.
If a particular disk ID is not included in the firmware, the burner uses a generic strategy to attempt the burn.Sometimes it fails to give good results.
Generally drives will recognize the likes of 'Verbatim' and 'Taiyo-Yuden' media.
Unless you can get a list of approved media from the drive manufacturers site, it's a guessing game for the user.
If you have found a media that gives consistently good results, then stay with it.

@Wolf123,
Please post your particular DVD burner, and firmware version you are using. If your firmware is out of date, your burner may not know how to burn that particular type of media.
Look here to see if you can find newer firmware for your particular brand of burner. http://forum.rpc1.org/portal.php
Also, let us know which program you are using, some programs give better results than others. The more info, the better we can help you figure this one out.
