Firefox/Internet Explorer just shut down

Both browsers will shut down for no reason, no error comes up after.
Occasionally it will say virutally memory is too low, not sure if they are related or not.
Thanks for anyones help

Yes, this can happen if your computer doesn't have enough memory.
Check that you are not running too many programs all at once, even if they do run in the background.

Nah its not that, Ive got enough memory
but this keeps popping up
The file or directory C:\MFT is corrupt and unreadable
Please run the Chksk utility.
Thinking ive got a virus or something.

Sounds like Driver issues - I'll think over your description and see if
I can cobble together some suggestions.
What does the Event Viewer have to say?
This symptom is a sign of a failing HD - I recommend you immediately backup any critical files, including pictures, favorites/bookmarks, email, password safe, etc.
To view the chkdsk log, go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer > Application, then look in the Source column and double-click on the Winlogon entries. chkdsk results should be listed - see if any specific errors are listed.
Can you boot into Safe Mode? If so, boot into Safe Mode. Once fully booted, you have two options. I have seen these endless chkdsk cycles go away once a complete reboot into Safe Mode occurs, as it "sometimes" allows chkdsk to perform its task completely. So once into Safe Mode with no problem, reboot again, this time into normal Windows, and see if the problem is cleared.
If not, go into Safe Mode again and this time, go to Start > Run and enter: chkdsk /r
This will attempt repair any corrupted sectors and other errors on the disk. If asked, allow it to run at next boot.
If you have an original Microsoft Windows installation disk, you could boot to the CD, go into Recovery Console and run chkdsk /r from there.
If the problem persists, determine the brand of the HD and visit their website's downloads section for a diagnosis program and run that.
If it checks out ok, then a Window's Repair install may be required, but that is a last ditch type effort and should be done only after all other options have been tried.

thats what the event viewer says, so i do not believe any errors
will attempt the safe mode when i get home from work

i did the safe boot and did the chkdisk
upon restarting
an error message came up saying page file size is not valid or too small
anyone know what that means?

Right click My Computer > Proprties > Advanced > Performance Settings > Advanced > Virtual Memory > Change. Take note of Page File Size. The rule of thumb (though some disagree) is to set page file size to 1.5x the amount of installed RAM in mb. So one gig equals 1024mb RAM, then set to about 1533 page file size. There's also a checkbox for letting system determine file size but evidently that's not working for you. Restart.

ive been having a hard time really even being able to get thru a few windows to reply to this thread, sometimes its so aggravating i just give up for the night. Hope this message lasts long enough.
Anywho ive pretty much tried everything that you guys have thought of, with the exception of the format option, as my xp cd is somewhat scratched and I wanted to avoid that as a last ditch effort. I would say 20 percent chance that i would be able to get XP back on this cpu and the cd would be able to be read.
I do appreciate all for your help, im wondering if i should be searching for a possible virus that might be doing this?

To check for viruses, we will need to take some time, and given your computer's condition, it might not be possible at all.
Does really sound like a reinstall is the only option though... sorry about that.
