ok i know NOTHING about X-Box's so here we go.
A Mate at work is haveing trouble with his sons X-Box (not 360) and gave it to me to have a look at. eeepp!
he bought it for hs son abou 2yr ago and had it modded a little while ago, but ever since the mod the dvd drive will not recognise DVD's (original or burnt games or dvd's) but would till play audio discs. and just recently it has stopped playing audio dsics to :-S
u can hear the drive working,
in the x-box dashboard the widnow appears saying that the x-box cant read the disc as it may not be a genuine x-box media or the disc is damaged or dirty.
in the evox dashboard under, applications -> XMBC (Xbox media center) -> media (or audio) when you insert a disc into the x-box in the window pane to the right where it lists the drives, nect the the DVD Drive the words (busy) appear but then go bask to empty.
so i assume the dvd drive is working but is not recognising any disc and therefore is reporting back EMPTY.
now for the nitty gritty bits.
MFG 2005-05-13
From the MFG date & serial number i kno its a V1.6 X-box (dont kno if it is a 1.6A or B though)
Now on boot you have the standard green bob thingy video, then it goes to a screen with X-Box in blue writing and a EVO-X logo in the top left hand corner.
a few seconds more and the words "SlaYers 2.7" appears under the X-box blue writing.
the dashboard then appears with
"Name SlaYers_EvoXEmulators" and "Evolution X V+3935"
written along the bottom
I opened up the xbox and the X-box has a "DuoX v2 Lite" modchip instaled
http://pictures.xbox-scene.com/4/duox2lite/duox2_lite_fullset.jpg
ok so in summary we got a
V1.6 xbox
Duo X2 lite modchip
SlaYers 2.7 EvoX auto installer has been applied. (although my mate does not have this disc)
so why the F*** cant it read discs in the DVD drive ?!?

This happened immediately it was modded.. not like weeks after?
If that's the case (assuming the cables are ok.. check the ide cable by replacement) the bios version flashed to the chip needs investigating.
Sometimes strange things happen with the 1.6. I have seen where unlocking and locking the hdd a couple of times without rebooting will clear apparent dde's.

The easiest way to check the bios is the right version is by flashing a proper 1.6 m8 plus or similar on the chip..
Never had a duox2.. so that's as far as I can remember.

maybe you could try to boot the xbox of the original ms bios. so do not boot from the duo modchip, but boot regular. if the modchip is the problem, you should be able to load original dvd's if you boot the original ms bios! it could also be that the laser of your dvd drive is dead. if that is the case, a pod tweak might bring it back for a couple of months before replacing is necessary.

found out how to boot from ms bios or modchip bios here
Quote: https://www.quantronics.com.au/esupport/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=2
but doesnt work, power on via power button, or eject button only boots from modchip.
found tutorial on how to flash bios here
Quote: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/208817
found Evox M8 Plus V1.6 bios on eurasia.nu
but i cant access the tutorials on how to put bios on a cd and how to flash the bios on the xceuter site from the link above.
so i now have a bios but no idea on how to flash the modchip's bios. hmm...
ALSO on a side note
from the evox dash -> applications -> xbox bios checker.
i get the following
Quote: Xbox Bios Checker 4.0b
Chip Type -> TSOP Reflashed (AMD Am29FO40B) <- the DuoX V2 Lite mod chip i m guessing
then it lists about 6 bios' all listed as unknown
ALSO under Evox Dash-> Apps-> XMBC-> Shutdown button (bottom right corner)-> System Information-> Hardware Tab
I get
Detected Bios: Unknown. Please add MD5 from XMBC.loc to BiosID
i think anyway.
So from everything said so far i m guessing i have a modchip that has the wrong or corrupt firmware on it hence it being listed as unknown and listed as TSOP Reflashed (not that i know what that means)

to boot from the modchip, you either have a switch. when in one position, the chip is turned on and it will boot from the modchip. in the other position it is off and then it will boot the stock bios. if there is no switch, you can boot the modchip by holding the power button for about 3 seconds. then it will boot the modchip. if you only press the power button once, it should boot the original stock bios!
or there has been a tsop flash, and the original ms bios has been replaced with the executor (or evox for that matter) bios. then you can only boot the executor (or evox) bios off course, since that has been flashed over the original ms bios. it looks like your box has been tsop flashed if it can only boot one bios(the executor). you can always open it op, and look if you can see a mod chip. if you can't find any, than it is a tsop flash (but you found a chip). the manufacturing date itself does not tell you much, since i have a v1.6 xbox that is from 2002! (and yes, the previous owner just replaced the original casing with an older one. so your xbox might not necessarily have the original casing around it, it might be a replacement casing that belongs to another xbox! as is with my xbox!)
in any of those cases (tsop flash/modchip), you can easily reflash the bios.
just look for the slayer's 2.7 boot disk, it has tons of stuff on it that is useful. but with the disc you can also flash many different bios on your xbox (amongst the evox and executor bios). reflash the tsop or the modchip. so just look for the slayer disc (i dl it from torrent sites), burn it to a disk. put the disc into your xbox. either boot from it directly or start it from you modified dashboard (if you have any). go to the option or flashing your bios, and choose the right one. looking for the slayers disc if the easiest way, takes a little time to download (about 20 minutes.....) but there is so much you can do with the disc and it is all so easy. no difficult tutorials needed!! you can always extract the iso over ftp to your harddrive (since you might not be able to read the disc in your drive).
another alternative is to find the mechassault or 007auf raincoat gamesave (find it on eurasia site, you have to register first). just ftp the files from the raincoat gamesave to anywhere on your xbox, put the correct bios file in the right place and run it. then it will flash it automatically (but i prefer the slayer disc!

i can see the modchip when i open it up.
i researched it and found out if was a DuoX V2 Lite modchip.
i cannot see any switch or jumper setup on it. research into the chip determined power button start = modchip bios, eject button start = Ms bios.
but since both boot the same bios, i m guessing someone has flashed over the ms bios so both methods boot the same.
it is hard to tell whether or not the bios it has been flashed with is the executor or evox as both the sys info in xmbc and the bios checker util both determine an "Unknown bios"
i did download a EvoX M8+ bios for the v.16 xbox from urasia.nu that from the nfo file inside the rar says that it is for the same kernel that this xbox uses.
i will dl the slayers 2.7 disc and see what i can do with that.
it may not work though as the dvd drive in the xbox will not read dvd discs (will read cd's though)
[which is the problem that started this whole adventure]
hopefully i can burn the slayers disc to a cdrw or cd-r instead of a dvd.
if not i may have to find a way to flash the bios from the evox bios i dl from urasia.nu

xbox cannot read cd-r.
will have try cd-rw.
drive only intermitantly reads audio discs now. so i hink drive is on its way out aswell as bios needs reflashing

this is actually common.
There are currently three drive types in the xbox 1
Mitsumi
Samsung sdg-605
samsung sdg-616a/b/f
The worst:
Samsung sdg-605B
This drive doesn't read dvd-r or cd-r.
You can tell version really easy.
First edition xboxes have the controller port wires connected to a small circuit board connected to the main board this is version 1 and first edition version 2.
After that you go into version 3 and version 4 and version 5.
Version 3: black hard drive/dvd drive model 605
version 4: Silver hard drive/dvd drive model 605 B
version 5: silver hard drive/any of the drives version ABEF usually a samsung drive without dvd-r read function or even cd-r function this is when the xbox 1 drive hack comes in handy

1)yes, it will fit on a cdrw (i burned it to a cdrw also).
2)you can also flash via evox, you have to edit the evox.ini i believe.
3)you can also use the raincoat exploit (around a few mb's), just copy it to your hard drive. since yours is already modded, just run the install.xbe in the raincoat exploit and it will run from your hard drive.
4)eurasia flash is also possible by making 2 bootdiscs (on cdrw)
I myself used the slayers disc, that was for me the most easiest.
5) clean the top lens of the dvd drive with a cotton tip and some alcohol, you might be surprised that it will read a lot better. i had a samsung drive that wouldn't read anything, i cleaned the toplens with some alcohol and it started to read everything again.
