Which Blu-Ray players can play computer video files?

My DVD player no longer works so I am looking to make the switch to Blu-Ray. I would like it to be able to play video files from my computer that I burn onto cds or dvds. I am having trouble finding out which players can play what. I see that some retailers have in their specs whether or not it is DIVX compatable. Can I assume that if it will play DIVX it will also play AVIs, XVIDs and other computer video formats? If it doesn't, can you install different codecs on the players like you could on a computer to get them to play? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
