I am very new to this dvd burning (Ive burned vcd's,thats all)

I was going to purchase a dvd burner and was wondering if HP DVD300i 4x DVD Writer is any good?

It's cheaper than some, but I wanna know if it's worth the $140?

The Pioneer 106 supports both +/- formats and is one of the most reliable on the market.

Can I just ask, what does -/+ mean?

A simplistic answer is that both +r/rw and -r/rw are just 2 different media formats. My only comment to differentiate between the 2 is that my older player would not understand the +r/rw disks while the -r/rw was readable.

I will leave it to the more experienced in this forum to explain further

No need to explain about different formats unless the back ups are gonna be played on an old DVD stand alone really :)

As Discmania quite rightly pointed out Pioneer is one of the most reliable on the market , I can verify this also as I am still using a Pioneer 104 [my writer has never been any trouble].

Plus if reviews/articles are to be believed then it might well be possible to burn 'dual layer' using Pioneer106/107 after flashing with firmware (happy days)!! : ]-~

Been happy with the Pioneers i have owned. Would suggest a Pioneer DVR107 as with a firmware upgrade available now it will burn 4x Ritek media (and others) at 8x meaning copying a DVD in 7mins. Not sure about the specification of the HP300i.
