I've been using the magic swap on my ps2 for a bit over a year, and I've noticed the some of the DVDR backed up games starting to take longer to load, skip, etc.. maybe its because of the media or maybe DVDRs are taking its toll on the laser, or maybe both.
So I know DVDRs can wear out PS2 lasers,
but I heard that after using so many DVDRs it messes up the laser and its possible for the laser to damage PS2 disks? (the retail disks)
Is this true? Would regular games be alright on a PS2 that has been though extended DVDR wear and tear?
I think the laser is just a reader and it "shouldn't" be able to damage anything, but I thought I should double check just in case.

The better media you use and burn too will be easier on the PS2 laser.
This is not true that the laser will hurt your PS2 games, retail or backup.
I use SonyDVD-R mostly and have played backups for quite a few years and my discs are still good.
If your backup can be read in your pc, you can try backing it up again using imgburn and reburn the ISO to a new disc.
You can also try cleaning your laser.
Get a q-tip and some rubbing alcohol. Carefully but firmly clean in a circular motion for about 30 seconds with the q-tip.
Then with a dry q-tip, repeat the same procedure to dry the laser off.
