Try the 30 day trial of DVDFab Platinum.
You can also use the free DVDFab HD Decrypter to rip your files to your HDD and then use AutoGK.

Here's a link to my first attempt at DVD to AVI - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_jump.cfm/705903/4295188
Today i will do another test, using AutoGK on it's lonesome in order to gauge how long it takes as last time i (heavily) multitasked the conversion on my Q6600 so didn't have an accurate runtime..
edit- did a couple dvd movies using AutoGK, each took just over an hour and the quality was pretty impressive on default settings (1.4GB output file split into 2 but i ditch the 2-parts and keep only the single 1.4GB part, i keep choosing the wrong setting when it asks how many parts you want to split it into).

I also prefer Auto GK, it works well for me.
I've only used it to reduce and re-encode a DVD-5 to DivX CD-R, but have always been pleased.

I'd not used DVDFab Platinum for this before, so am doing a test now,
Same movie i used in the AutoGK test, similar settings as used in AutoGK. DVDFab estimates conversion time to be 1.5hours so half an hour more than AutoGK...

But AutoGK takes longer overall since you need to rip the video to hard disk.

You should rip them to HDD first. What if there is a problem with the rip?

I am not sure how DVDFab Platinum operates, but most likely it puts a temp file on your hard drive and works off that, so, in a way it does need that step. Then the temp file disappears after it reencodes to Divx.
Agreed it may be an all in one solution, but AutoGK is the free one.
If I wouldnt have already owned AnyDVD when platinum added their "encode to AVI feature" perhaps I would have bought it for that extra step it takes care of, but I'm happy with what I use and can say that for free AutoGK cant be beat.
EDIT=what dialysis just said.......

So if it takes 20 minutes to rip the movie + 5 minutes to set up AutoGK
and an hour for it to run it beat Platinum in time :)

I see your thinking hehe,.
edit- DVDFab finally completed, have to say it was too pixelated for my liking. Mine was by no means a scientific test but i think i'll be sticking to AutoGK if i do this again in future....

Was there a guide for AutoGK? What settings are you using Creaky? (Rez, format, bitrate?)

There is no doubt a guide somewhere, i just clicked on a couple obvious choices and bam, it runs. I personally attack a new program by just using it first, if it all goes to pot or there's too many things to set/check, i go looking for a guide, but autoGK is really easy to use, on default setings anyway.

So basically use DVD Shirnk to rip the file to HDD first and then use AutoGK to convert to AVI.

Yes, except you could be using the freebie DVDFab HD Decrypter for the ripping as Shrink can't break thru the newer encryptions, but for me anyway, AutoGK fits the bill perfectly.
