Need some advice on possible upgrades for my Inspiron 8200 laptop. My main purpose of upgrading is to be able to play the latest pc games. If that's impossible, I still would like to know the maximum upgrade my inspiron can handle.

Here are the specs:
Intel Pentium 4 Moblile CPU 1.70 GHz
1.0 Gb RAM (upgraded from 512 Mb recently)
NVIDIA GeForce4 440 Go
40 Gb HardDrive

My last question is whether it's worth investing on upgrading or I should just save up for a new computer.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

They haven't made a Pentium 4 for years, quite right. With desktop PCs you can keep the case and gut the rest, but with laptops you can't even do that.

I guess I'll have to start investing. My only concern is whether the new laptops in the $500-600 range can handle the latest games. I'm seeing most laptops in that range are 2.0ghz with dual core processor, but many of the new games require like 2.6ghz processor at minimum. I'm thinking someone will tell me that the dual core processor at 2.0ghz is comparable to the 2.6ghz pentium 4 processor.
Ok but how long do you think the new laptop with lets say 2.0ghz dual core processor and decent graphic card will hold until it can no longer meet the system requirement of the latest games? Will it be upgradable or will I have to start investing again?

with laptops your very limited to what game you can play as most laptops are non upgardeable. if you want to play this gen games on a laptop you would spend a lot more muney that what you are thinking about. the whole dual core thing that you are talking about that an old p4 is nothing compared to a 2.0ghz dual core processor because you would have two 2.0ghz working together as one big processor that would equal 4ghz. if you want to play the laest game you would be better off with a desktop of this spec

2.6ghz dual core processot (INTEL or AMD)
nvidia 8800GT Or equalent ATI card
2 gigs of ram.

i would say that is the bare minium that you could play games of today with decent fame rate. As you are saying about would you have to invest agian in the near future, i think you have to because of the speed that technoligy is moving at.

@sam
you are quite right about a desktop i wouldnt buy a laptop again.

A $600 laptop can't play modern games, that's it, it just can't. You need to spend AT LEAST $1000 to get even mediocre performance in some games.
