hard drive disappeared; delayed write error

I returned to my computer observed the following error on my screen: 

windows was unable to save all the data for the file /device/harddiskvolume4/$Mft. the data has been lost. This error may be caused by a afailure of your computer hardware or network connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere. 

delayed write fail
I first suspected that my computer had recently restarted because I usually get a dialog box which looks similar for unrelated reasons at startup, but after hastily closing the window I realized something was up. Both partitions of my newest hard drive disappeared completely from my My Computer panel along with all of the media stored therein.
The error popped up again a few hours later(no drives missing this time), and I was able to copy it down and google it. The error message itself is associated with a number of different hardware problems, so I had a hard time finding anything on my specific case. Which brings me here to you!

Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU
6400 @2.13GHz
AT/AT COMPATIBLE
3,397,428 KB RAM

I run windows 2000 and have 3 other cheap 500 gig internal sata drives, not sure if any of this is relevant.
