I have a bunch of retail DVD's that I would like to backup on my HD. I have been using DVDfab, but now I'm wondering which format I should convert to - AVI, XVID, MKV, MP4. I'm most concerned with quality and file size. Which format should I go with? Also, is there a program that allows me to rip straight from the DVD to another format, or do I need to rip to HD then convert?
DVDFab Platinum will rip DVD to MP4 format. this is a small footprint and has quality to it. You can add the mp4 to your iPod or iPhone or other portable device that supports MP4s. There are plenty of other programs that will rip to AVI, MP4, etc.
On the other hand, keeping DVD format is the best for quality.
I will not be watching these movies on Ipod or other portable devices, just the computer. I've been reading alot about MKV and x264. Some people say MKV with x264 has better quality than AVI. Does x264 even apply to standard DVD.
Also, I know there are lots of conversion programs out there, but the ones I downloaded where to convert file types to DVD, not the other way around. ConvertXtoDVD for example, great program, but it can only convert to DVD. I don't need to convert to DVD I need to convert from DVD. And so far I am leaning towards MKV, so what program can convert DVD to MKV?
