I've been having issue with my computer since I'm sure this will be a newbie question have just a little patience with me. I get my internet access from my cable company but for the last month or so the connection just goes out at any old time it feels like i've had repairmen over 3 times in the last 2 weeks. they do what they do leave and I get the same problem hours later, if not minutes. they dealt with the wiring in the back of the buliding, in my apartment, and i changed the modem as well.could a virus in my computer be the root of the problem. to any and all replies thanks for any help and or replies THANKS!!

Hi knfusd
Before we begin the cleanup process, it is important to do a little analysis first. We will analyze your computer with a tool called HijackThis.
Please download the HijackThis zip file. Save it onto a convenient place in your computer, and then unzip the file.
Rename HijackThis(.exe) to scanner(.exe).
Next, run scanner(.exe). A window will pop up.
? Click on the button which says Main Menu, then Do a system scan and save a logfile.
? Please wait for the scan to be completed.
? After the scan has completed, a text window will pop up. Please post the contents of this window here.
This will also be located at hijackthis(.txt) in the same folder that HijackThis was originally saved.
NOTE:: Do not fix anything using HijackThis, as this may also damage legitimate components of your computer.

When I had a similar problem where my internet stopped working everyonce in a while or slowdown to be barely usable. I traced it to my antispyware software I was using (webroot spyware sweeper). After I uninstalled the software, I never expirence any more internet connection problems. That's just something to look at it.

I'm happy but perplexed. something has my desktop running very slow. as previously stated it could be my cable company, i'm on vacation been up since 0230 hours, was online and got cut off for about an hour,called cablevision at which point my connection came back on after being on phone with them for about half an hour. So if I'm clean i'm leaning that way, but how could symantec's firewall cause any havoc by the way? Also your signature is cute but has me concerned since that describes me almost to a nutshell. could you give me some info on that as well! Thanks Again.

Please note that I can never determine whether your computer is clean or not; I can only say if your log is clean.
Try disabling Symantec's firewall the next time your internet connection goes out. See if that helps.
Basically, my signature shows you the information you computer can give away, including where you live. This is basically one example of how you can be traced.
We can do more analysis to see if you are infected or not. Please follow these instructions:
Now, please download ComboFix.
With ComboFix, at the download window, please rename it to Combo-Fix(.exe) before downloading it. Save it to your Desktop.
Please disable all security programs, such as antiviruses, antispywares, and firewalls.
? Run Combo-Fix.exe and follow the prompts.
? Accept the End-User License Agreement.
? Allow the Recovery Console to be installed.
? When you see the window below, click on Yes.
? When the Recovery Console has been installed, click on Yes to start the scan.
**Understand that things like your system clock changing and your desktop disappearing might happen. Do not worry, because all will be restored later.
? Wait for the scan to be fully completed.
? If it requires a reboot, please do so.
? After the scan has completed entirely, please post the log here. The log will be located at C:\ComboFix(.txt)
Do not click on the ComoboFix window, as it may cause it to stall.

Dear Knfsd, i had the same problem, changed modem, etc..., the problem was with the splitter that came from inside of my house. Cablevision (LI, NY) repaired for free. I was CONSTANTLY booting up the modem in which i also have a wireless router attached.
