connecting HDMI and audio

Hi, I have a xbox 360 and im getting the samsung LN46A550 HDTV soon with a blu-ray player. the thing is my Philips 5.1 surround sound does not have ''optical audio in'' and since i want to connect both my xbox and blu-ray via HDMI i was wondering if i could run the red and white audio out on the TV to my surround, that should work right?? HDMI video with red white audio out

no that would not be surround sound only left and right channel. what connectors do you have on the back of your surround sound???

when I googled you unit it came back as a home theater unit not a surround sound unit. All in one home theater are designed to do one option and that is play dvds in surround sound not all other devices. just to make sure is that what you have. http://www.amazon.com/Philips-HTS3555-Th...y/dp/B000N5ZARK
if so you do not have a home receiver. with what you are trying to so is some thing like this.

I am upgrading mine soon. since my receiver does not take hdmi in/outputs. I am hooking up a ps3, xbox360, and comcast all with hdmi for highest sound and picture. with what you have everything will hook up to the tv and if you can hook those things up to what you have it will be only in left/right channel (stereo) NOT surround sound. Many people buy those thinking its something else then what it is. I know that I did when I first got started in home audio and video. btw that unit that I am telling you about will be onsale on Black friday for 200.00. I have been waiting for these to drop for a while. when receivers first came out that had hdmi they were over 1000.00 they have dropped quickly and if you can get one on black friday I would it would solve all your problems wince you can hook 3 hdmi into. also DO NOT BUY HDMI CABLES FROM ANY RETAIL STORE. how would that work if comming from only the left and right channel. how would the unit split the singal to 5.1 when itself is comming out as 2.0. I am not talking about simulation surround sound but actual 5.1 surround sound as he is asking for.

Dolby Digital is a relatively new development (the OP asked about surround). I'd been listening to various permutations of Dolby Surround from 2 analog outputs for over 20 years. If memory serves me right even some early stereo video cassettes, VHS and Beta had the Cinema Dolby multi-channel matrix encoded audio, before consumers even had a way to decode it.
I enjoyed many years of multi-channel Dolby Surround with my analog only 2 channel output VHS Hi-Fi VCR. My first receiver was Dolby Pro Logic followed by a Pro Logic II unit. There was nothing 'simulated' about it. I could also listen to true multi-channel surround on certain TV shows whenever the Dolby logo appeared during the opening. David Letterman for one.
Dolby Surround/Pro Logic is based on basic matrix technology. When a Dolby Surround soundtrack is created, four channels of sound are matrix-encoded into an ordinary stereo (two channel) sound track by using phase shift techniques. A Pro Logic decoder/processor "unfolds" the sound into the original 4.0 surround?left and right, center, and a single limited frequency-range mono rear channel
In 2000, Dolby introduced Dolby Pro Logic II (DPL II), an improved implementation of Dolby Pro Logic. DPL II processes any high quality stereo signal source into "5.1"?five separate full frequency channels (left, center, right, left surround and right surround) plus one low-frequency-effects (deep bass) channel. Dolby Pro Logic II also decodes 5.1 channels from stereo signals encoded in traditional four-channel Dolby Surround.

I did not know that. You learn something new everyday. I thought that it had to come from the sound source in 5.1 to be surround sound. I didnt know that the Receivers can re encode from stereo sound to surround sound without problems and separate all the channels properly.

ya, i did some research right after i posted, and i read all about pro logic 2, all these people before were telling me it was stereo, but i was always wondering why it sounded so much like 5.1 cause right now im playing xbox 360 and i can hear cars on the left, right, in back, and a good deep bass also, so i was confused but ya its the pro logic, for now im just going to plug in the 360 with HDMI to the tv then audio adapter on the 360 to the left right audio directly to my home theatre. atleast ill have the pro logic until i can upgrade to some optical audio and HDMI receivers :) thanks alot guys
