Orange 6500 slide woes............. :(

Hi all. Hoping someone can help me out here!
My son has recently traded (as kids do!) with a friend and now has a 6500 slide. Seemed ok at first until he began transferring the sim from the nokia into an Ericcson and back again, in order to retrieve contacts etc.
Then the trouble began! "sim card registration fail" each and every time he tried to switch on.
A local 'celular fix it' store point blank refused to look at the phone saying the message is a clear identifyer of a stolen handset.
Despite my protests at this being an impossibility (I know the boy and family it came from and stealing or handling stolen goods is just never going to happen!) and that I had read on-line others had experienced similar 'software' problems following removal and reinsertion of sim-cards, we were told in no uncertain terms to leave the store!
So while we pondered the problem we filed the phone in the 'stumped--well and truly' drawer. (this is where many electronic bits and bobs live, usually finding their way there following one of my failed brainstoms to repair, or , make 'a good'n from two bust'ns'---every fella has one of these drawers I reckon!!)
Well last night I decided to take a look. I charged it, popped in his sim and hey presto....it worked. Fine and dandy....not! Like father like son, mini-messer begins to swap info again between phones.
Back to square one!
"sim card registration fail" so there is no service again wotsoever.
Please if anyone has any idea how I can sort this out I'd be very grateful. Thanks in advance.
