Hey all i just got a question. I have a large collection of Avi files to usually burn to dvd, usually 5 Avi vids to a disc, but sometimes im seeing that most mkv are starting to be better in quality and wondering if it will hold a lot more files than Avi files. So basically im asking what do you think is better to burn to Dvd? MKV files or continue with Avi files? If so why?
Both are simply container formats. Look up both formats in this site's glossary and you'll get clear definitions for both.
The biggest thing, I'd say, is that the .avi format is simply old. It isn't capable of storing many streams like an .mkv can. There's a lot of technical mumbo-jumbo, but .mkv simply stores more stuff.
As for burning to DVD, if you have the same quality video stream in both containers, it won't really matter what you do, because both will come out looking the same on DVD.
The difference here is that the .avi video stream is often very big. Like... insanely big. The advantage to the .mkv format is that its video stream can be anything, be it an h264, Xvid, DivX, etc. video stream.
...at least that's what I'm getting. I'm sure I dumbed it down to the point where I'm wrong, but that's the basics of it.
The reason why .mkv files seem to be getting better in quality is because the video stream being stored in them is of higher quality, that's all.
