I am sorry my question does not have to deal with a internal hard drive but, I was hoping that someone could help me with an external hard drive problem. I have a fantom 500 gb external hard drive. It used to work real good I moved it and tried to plug in back to my PC and it doesn't work anymore. The power light turns on but it doesn't make that sound hard drives make when they turn on (the humming sound) or even try and talk to the PC. I left it alone once and about 3 hours later it finally turned on and I was able to use it. As for now I left it on all night and it didn't come on. I tried using different USB cords but still nothing. Is there a way to hook up the external hard drive to my PC by opening it up and transfering all the data to another external hard drive? Or what other option do I have? I got all my music and pictures on that hard drive and don't want to lose them.

Most probably the circuit board is stuffed on the USB case, just remove the hdd & shove it into the comp as a slave that way you'll know for sure, there's two types of hdd PATA & SATA ,they're pretty much the same except for the type of cabling they use,you can do a web search for any more info on them,as for external USB housings,my longest lasting one is by STLabs,it's aluminium with removable top & sides it's around 5 years old, just recently got 3 new ones that are similar, the diff being is they're a bit bigger & can take SATA or PATA HDD's,so far they perform good, detection is excellant they're called Black Cyclone, they all alloy & can be completely stripped down, makes em good for testing numerous hdd's,the only other external that's lasted is a western digital Elements, which is only 1 year old so far
