I have magic swap 3.6, and I was trying to play Gradius V (backed up onto a CD-R). My PS2 slim makes cracking sounds when reading the CD-version of Magic Swap... not sure if that's normal or not. But either way, the system loads and the disk stops spinning. I swap it with my backup of Gradius V and started the game. It spins, but the game doesn't show. It's just a black screen.

So I was wondering, is my ps2 slim broken? DVD-based backups work fine.

Do you have any Original PS2 CD to try in your Slim to see how it reads them?

How old is your slim, you may need to clean the laser. Use q-tip and rubbing alcohol.
Clean in a circular motion for about 30 secs. Then dry it in same manner with a dry q-tip for about 8-10 secs.

Try loading your SM DVD first, then swap for the SM 3.6 CD
Then try your backup.

I'm not sure how old my slim is, but judging by the BIOS, it's one of the newer slims that was produced. I bought it a few months ago on eBay, and it seems the previous owner wasn't too careful with handling it (scratches everywhere), so yeah, you're probably right that the laser might be dirty. Thanks for the instructions, I'll definitely try that. :)

It might not be the laser, it might just be the fact that Slimlines (Newer models), have trouble reading CDROM games. Because my Slimline does the same thing when running CDROM PS2 games.
