Hi.
First of all, sorry for posting a thread that has been covered extensively elsewhere on these forums. But the rule about not being able to post to a thread > 60 days old prevented me from adding there.
I say the subject has been covered extensively, but curiously there is no solution to what appears to be a common problem - anywhere on the Internet. So I thought this would be an opportunity to provide everyone suffering from this with a definitive answer.
Basically, as the subject heading says, my DVD player does not recognise blank discs. Windows Explorer lists the device, a Pioneer DVR-116D as being a DVD burner. However, inserting a blank disc then changes it to being a CD player, according to Windows XP. This burner is a new model, and should accept all media; -R, +R etc.
The strange thing is, I had a different DVD burner with the same problem, which I took back and the store exchanged it for this one, believing the burner to be at fault. Clearly that is not the case.
I have tried burning with various pieces of software, including Nero and DVD Cloner V, to no avail. I also updated the firmware, but none of these steps worked.
Any insight or advice would be gratefully received.
Thanks.

Hi Attar.
Thanks for being kind enough to reply - I appreciate it.
Unfortunately, I tried your suggestion but it didn't appear to make any difference. I also checked the BIOS, and the machine can certainly see the drive and identifies it as a DVD burner. It just changes to a CD drive in Windows Explorer when a blank DVD is inserted, which means I can't burn using any software at all (currently using DVD Cloner V). Very odd.

What media are you using?
Have you tried different brands?
Can it properly read commercial discs?

I wouldn't worry too much about changing to "CD drive" once you insert a blank media in your drive.
My burner is listed as a DVD burner, but if I start windows with a disc in the drive or I do a burn, it changes to CD. I have absolutely no problem burning DVD videos.
I don't know if I am on the right track or not, some googleing would probably confirm, but Windows does not natively support DVD burning, it needs a third party. When you insert a medium, explorer the dummy will list it as CD, they all look the same, round and shiny, and just because that's all it knows,CDs! However, if you go in Device manager, probably your drive is listed as a DVD drive.
Also dialysis1 asked a good question, can it read DVDs?
Open ImgBurn, insert a blank disc. Does ImgBurn display the disc info?
With Nero, you can use Nero CD-DVD Speed. probably they will recognize your drive/disc properly.
Is your firmware up to date?(many times people say they updated, but they missed).
Do you have an error log from your failed burns? DMA could be off and such...
Piss me off, and I Will ignore You!

Further to 'cyprusrom', I take it that on this burner, Windows will copy and burn to a CD?

All the drive/s connected properly to the IDE ribbons: Master/Slave/C/S?
Make sure those jumper pins are set in the back of the pioneer, and properly placed on the correct IDE ribbon.
Go through device manager, unstill the drivers to the 116d and reboot. Sometimes dvd-rw drives get lost, making drives look like cd only drives.

Good news. Changing the registry entries appears to have fixed it. Well, enough for me to burn a disc; I still can't use DVD Cloner V successfully, but that doesn't matter as Image Burn has now started working.
Thanks to everyone who made a suggestion - it's very good of you to share your knowledge and experience.
