What is a good way to compress mp3 files so I can fit more onto my mp3 player?

Compressing them to smaller size = transcoding would mean to get worse quality than you'd get when encoding from CD directly to lower bitrate. Anyway, if you want to try this, use lame with some frontend (-> afterdawn download section) and some of the recommended settings (sticky thread in this subforum).
