what do i do when patching a file with esr disc patcher and get the message "no udf desc" ?

It sounds like its not a true ISO image. You will have to remake the ISO.
YOu can do that by mounting the ISO image you have with virtual drive, such as Nero, Daemon tools, etc.
Then use Imgburn to create a new ISO.
