Hi all. A newbie here to taking family video. I still have a crt Tv so that shows you how behind I am.

This holiday I want to outfit myself with a new video HD camera. I am gratefull for ANY help on what type of camera to buy. I would like to get the best quality for the least amount of price,(Who doesn't).

I have purchased Magix Media software for editing on my PC using XP so I'm covered there.

But...I know nothing about types of files to save the video to. I'd like a camera with just a hard drive and one that takes the pictures in letterbox format if possible since when I upgrade my tv to a LCD, that's what I'll be watching the video on.

Any help with camera types, brands, pixels, file types, your own experiences both good and bad, etc. are appreciated. Just pour it on.

Thank you all, enjoy the season and have a happy new year!
