Black bars when watching Blu-ray

I just bought my blu-ray player. When watching a movie it does not take up the full screen. I have black bars at the top and bottome of the screen. My TV is set to 16:9 and the blu-ray player is also. My TV is a Samsung LN46a650 and the blu-ray player is a Samsung BD-P1500. I know there is a simple explanation to this, just don't know what it is.

The simple explanation is this: O. A. R. - or Original Aspect Ratio

If your movie was shot in 1.85:1 aspect ratio then you won't see the black bars top and bottom. Example:




If your movie was shot in a "Scope" widescreen ratio of 2.35:1 then you will see the top and bottom black bars. Example:

Thank you for the help. For some dumb reason I thought that if I had a hdtv that displayed 16:9 and blu-ray player that did the same it would fill the screen, but I understand now.

What is the point of "Scope" widescreen?
I sell electronics's and I never new how to answer this question.

indeed! 16x9 FHA (full height anamorphic) within 4x3 Letterbox is one of the most pointless screen formats to grace this earth! :)

it is normal. not all movies/programs are filmed or taped in the new 16:9 format. some tv's will allow a full screen display but the picture will be stretched to fit the screen.
