The problem is that the drive now stops DVD playback after about 6-7 minutes (any 6-7 minutes, not just the first 6-7 minutes) of a DVD, and freezes the m/c.
The problem can sometimes occur when playing back CD's too, when this happens it is towards the end of the CD.

The machine is an IBM Thinkpad R50e 1834S5G dating from about October 2005. It has XP Home with all updates, RAM upgraded to 768MB.

The DVD drive has worked OK in the past both for playback and recording, but we haven't tried to use it for recording for quite a while.
The regionalisation options are still in place as it has only ever been used to play back Region 3 DVDs. We have never changed the firmware so it is original.

Is this likely to be a hardware problem? In which case is it likely to require a replacement drive or are there simple things to try first like cleaning the laser?

Or is it more likely to be a software/firmware problem?

Grateful for any knowledge or suggestions for further diagnosis that others can impart.
