Anyone recomment a good Usenet Newsgroup client/software that is secure?

Can anyone recommend any decent Usenet newsgroup client/software that is secure? I'm rather new to this you see.

I know a lot of users use Microsort Outlook as their client, but seeing as it's from Microsoft I'm not so sure on the privacy part, even if the newsgroup itself does offer 256-bit encryption.

I've also heard of Mozilla's Thuderbird, which is advertised quite a lot.

With ISP providers these days getting more and more intrusive on what users browse and download, you really do think sometimes.

Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.
