Laptop become slow when not charging

Hi guys,
when the charger is unplugged the computer becomes really slow and the screen becomes dimmer.
i can increase the brightness of the screen although i have to do it every time i plug in and unplug my charger but the computer itself becomes really slow. any ideas how i can sort this out?
until now i just used to keep my charger plugged in everywhere i go but that is no longer an option as the wire near the connector has become broken and needs bending to make it work so now i just charge the laptop when im not using it.
any ideas about how i can make my laptop work to its maximum speed?

i think its just a power saving mechanism i have tried to go into power management under control panel, tried tweaking all of the options but they make no difference.
and i doubt its a fault. been like that since the day the laptop was bought.
im running xp btw.

Yeah, that would be under some sort of power management setting. I hate when the OS tweaks my brightness when I unplug/plug in my laptop. What is your machine?

its some sort of a samsung. about 3-4 years old p5 2.8ghz 500mb ram.
i have checked power options and nothing changes it.

Some laptops have their own power management software, check and see if yours has.

sorry mate no power management software.
however it did come with a user manual. heres what it says:
Your computer includes Power Management options that can help the battery charge
last longer and extend the life of the battery. Power management options will slow
down or shut off system components when the components are not being used.
Power management may slow down system performance. Your computer runs fastest
with the power cord attached, when power management is disabled.
so what i gather from that is that attaching the power cord automatically disables power management so all i need to do is to find the option to disable power management permanently and i should be sorted.
only problem is that i cant find it. i have looked under every single tab under control panel>power options but nothing.
whats more is that i have been doing some reading and have worked out that i need to fully kill my battery before recharging to maintain its health, and with me keeping the charger plugged in 24/7 im guessing the battery is on its last legs, so i suppose this is a big issue.

almost broke my computer doing so (recieved a message saying no os found)

You don't have to 100% drain you battery every time. Just do it every few months ago and you'll maintain a respectable charge level.

i would say after reading all of that , that its probably your battery begining to go out. and what i really mean is that when your doing something its struggling more to turn your HD then when its pluged in. what votage is your laptop battery. maybe an upgraded better battery would serve you better , i notice myself it happens on my dell and its brand new .. its not super slow but it is slower even with all the options in the power management turn the way they need to be. and with yours being older the batterys werent made as well even just a few years ago. i think its a simple case of the battery fighting with amps and voltage to make your machine run and what not.

you dont understand.
that chunk of text i pulled out from before was out of the user manual.
and it testifies what im experiencing. it says that my laptop SHOULD become slow when its running on batteries.
the only thing it doesnt mention is how to turn this function off.

I've no idea to be honest, if it's not in the BIOS and there's no installed program doing it, all I can suggest is to comb the running processes list in your task manager.

i would say that it cant be turned off if the batterys voltage and amps just arent enough to run the machine to the best of its abilitys . and thats why it says itll be slower.

possible but i doubt it.
remember that the user manual mentions that the computer includes Power Management options. so its an option that should be able to become disabled.
and practically speaking. i dont think they would put in battery that cant power the machine. also if the battery doesnt deliver enough power doesnt that make the components liable to blow? i know that this is the case with desktop pc's and PSUs
other laptops from the same era dont have this problem. so its not as though samsung were technologically retarded at the time.
im thinking of installing another copy of xp over this one if that would solve the problem.
is there any 3rd party software that i might be able to consult before i take these radical steps?

The battery won't be at fault, as the cause of components failing when cheap PSUs go bang is overpower, not underpower.

Theres nothing wrong with the battery, it is definately something OS based. My laptop did the exact same thing, but the difference here is I am running Vista.
It does seem kind of stupid that you cannot turn this setting off on your computer. Perhaps, there is a CD you may need to install? I know when, for example, you reformat a computer, you then need to re-install any program that the computer needs to function. Perhaps there is a program that needs to be installed to properly configure, and essentially, turn off this feature.
Just stabbing at anything here, haha.

thats what i was thinking.
however instead of some form of software i think that the manfacturer might have left the option out of the OS version of xp.
thats why im thinking that a clean install of xp retail should fix it. or maybe just a repair installation or something like that.
what do you guys think?
