thanks sam, but that cards a little too expensive for me when i add another fan, so is there any other suggestions? i also took a look at the thermalright HR-03, but thats about the same price. i want to spend a total of about $50, including the fan and thermal paste (only if i really need to, i dont want to add it on myself).

Then don't bother, cheap coolers will only make things worse. There's absolutely no reason to replace the stock cooler on a 4870 except for absolute silence, or for overclocking, as the stock cooler does the job perfectly fine, trust me, I owned one.

yea, i own one too. and for me, the stock fan is the loudest part. and getting a heatsink would make it quieter and cooler. but if $30 heatsinks aren't the best for video cards like the HD4870, then ill just wait till i can spend a little more. thanks anyways.

The HD4850 you can get away with, but the HD4870 puts out a lot of heat, more than I would want to risk.

My stock cooler has done me fine. It has two fans so either I can run it very cool, except the 2nd fan is too noisy for my liking so I actually unplugged the 70mm fan and have it running on only the 80mm fan. As a result it idles higher, around 60C, but even under full load it tops out at 65C when the large fan throttles up with no noticeable noise difference. The problem with the 2nd fan was that it had no throttling and always ran at 100%. This was one of the Palit 512mb versions.

That's not the stock cooler, that's Palit's aftermarket cooler, which is admittedly better than the stock one, but much louder.

Ah, I thought that each manufacturer kept the same specs for the board and usually just changed the cooling, connections etc. Another dissapointing thing about the Palit is that it actually vents the hot air back inside the case. Fortunately the 300 provides good air flow, but had this been stuck inside an older or cheap case it could seriously cause problems. What the ranks for best ATI card makers?
