Does anyone know how to find out how many watts my PSU can handle(maybe a physical location or online calculator). I have looked everywhere short of opening the case. I may need an upgrade but am not sure what is available here in new zealand

Each power supply has a compliance sticker or riveted plaque stating the output and other info. You really need to remove the cover and have a look. Just take care with any fans and leads that the cover might have mounted. Easy does it.
You mention that you may need an upgrade. Two main reasons for an upgrade generally speaking, would be to improve on the quality of the unit that is currently in place or because you have upgraded other components such as a graphics card. An upgrade to a superior quality PSU is without doubt the best move you can make. Inferior PSU's can take other components out with them when they fail.

So in short..remove cover and post back the make and model of the PSU and go from there.

Cheers.

Bear in mind, the brad is every bit as important as the wattage figure. Many PSUs say they put out far more than they actually do.
