I watch my DVDs through my computer out to my tv. My computer is so loud it's almost not standable. I have blown the inside of it with an air compressor so dust isn't an issue. With it open I manually stopped what ever fan I saw running and I don't believe it to be a fan. What I did notice was the power supply inside is to blame. Can someone recommend a good power supply that is almost silent. I need a quite pc bad. Thanks

Get an Antec Earthwatts 380W, they're practically silent. I use my server PC for the same purpose as you, watching films, and I can't stand a noisy PC, this PSU has worked wonders.

Sorry I'm kind of a noob on this sort of thing. Do I need to purchase a whole new enclosure or can I just swap out the power drive. My buddy built my computer for me so I'm kind of in the dark and I have no contact with him anymore. I have installed cd drives and hard drives so I know a little bit about the insides of a computer. Is it just easier to get a new case rather than swap out the power supply?

the power supply is the box at the top (or sometimes the bottom) of the PC, on the inside. It's where you plug the power cable into.

sorry I found the power supply web site. How do I know it is compatible with my unit or does it not matter?

It should be a standard layout case, if the system was custom built, rather than being bought from a company like Dell.

f ing sweet! Quiet as can be. thanks. One question if you know. my old power supply had a 20 pin connector on it and the new one has a 24. my motherboard has a 24 pin but only 20 of them were plugged in with the old power supply. should i hook up all 24 with the new supply? (hope that makes sense)

Hey everyone it's me again. Even after the new power supply I still notice the noise I was originally trying to make quieter. My computer is about half as loud as it was so the new power supply was good. I looked in my computer and used my fingers to stop the fans and I can't seem to find which one it is. The noise is fairly high piched and if I had to guess I would say it was coming from the CPU fan but when I stop the fan it is still making noise. Any ideas on what it could be?

If it's a really high pitched whine it's probably the hard disk.

I've had 3 different hard discs any same result. The noise is like a annoying hum. How loud is your computer when you watch DVDs through it? Can you here your computer over the sound of the movie?

Ah, if you're playing DVDs when it's noisy then it'll be the DVD drive at fault.

The movies play through the hard drive. I've ripped them to ISO. The computer seems to be the quietest for the fist 10 minutes or so that it's on then it gets louder and never stops no matter what it's doing. Is it safe to unplug stuff while it's running to track down what it is?

I wouldn't risk it. Sounds like a CPU fan or case fan being thermally controlled.
