Copying Open Range

Hi folks,
I would like to make a back up of my dvd "Open Range", but I get pixilated result. I'm using clone dvd and NEC dvd recorder. This is the only movie that I have problem with so far.

If it is a really large movie then maybe think about splitting it over 2 discs (possibly).
I normally use DVD Decrypter / DVD2One / Nero 6 ['movie-only' way] and don't ever find that anything is pixelated as to spoil viewing.
I don't have the movie you are actually referring to in this particualr instance , but I've not heard that this is a problem DVD by title (well...as of yet anyway)

Herbsman - the reason you don't have the movie is becuase it's not even been released at the cinema yet(!)

i had no problem at all backing it up. dvddcryptor, dvd2one movie only...beautiful...and the movie has been out for many months in the theaters. mike

I also had no problems backing this one up. DVD Shrink - movie only - burned at 1x. I picked up my copy on DVD last Friday.

I think the movie gets released in UK in a couple of weeks which means the DVD will not be out here for about atleast six months. It's the latest film from director Kevin Costner I believe. With longer movies I use DVDXCopy on to two discs. Whilst I don't necessarily recommend DVDXCopy (certainly not Xpress) it's fine if you don't want to risk any compression.

It is 145 minutes , I have done longer films than that using DVD2One (in Variable Compression) and had good video quality !:-)
Maybe it's cos mdmania has a HDTV (?) , where compressed films may look slightly pixelated...
[Discmania mate: It badly doesnt look like a film I want to be watching , even when it does get released here in U.K - lmao] ! ; )

Hi,
New to the forums here. I just got my DVD burner yesterday (nec nd-2500a) and this is the first movie I tried to copy. I used shrink 3.1 and re-authored to remove menus and audio. Also chopped some of the lead-in and the credits at the end. Used nero6 to burn with memorex 4x dvd-r media. The video quality is terrific, however the Costner audio commentary is on the movie too, making it pretty much un-watchable. I pre-viewed the main movie file before ripping and it wasn't there. Any idea what happened, and what to try to get a good copy?

well, what audio streams did you keep? AC3 6-ch should have been the only one.

OK that must be it. I kept the AC3 1-ch stream because with the 5.1 stream the movie size was being reported as 8+ GB in Shrink. I will get a hold of some DVD-RW disks and play with it, thanks for the help!
edit: That did the trick. The movie burned perfectly at about 91% compression.

Dolby 5.1 is one of the things that makes DVD's worth having. Dropping a huge DTS file, if it exists makes sense, and any 2 channel tracks, but never Dolby 5.1.
