I have been using Nero 6 for a few years (on XP Notebook), but my burning needs have changed from backup to a focus of burning downloaded AVIs to DVD so I can watch them on TV. It seems that the Nero Vision 3 add on can not accomplish this. I have Nero 7 with Vision 4 at work and it does a fine job. I installed Nero 9 on my friend's computer and found the install terribly slow and annoying, but the AVI to DVD conversion was fine. So I am wondering if I should upgrade to 7, 8, or 9 or just stick with 6 and use a third party (ConvertXtoDVD)?

BTW also tried Roxio 9 and it was not able to complete encoding - would a Roxio version even be an option?

roxio.. nero... both are obsolete bloatware.. free tools do the job better and faster and don't conflict and attempt to fill your machines with DRM and all kinds of phone home spyware.

So.. to answer your question.. Neither.. dump the lot and go with freeware.

The new ConvertXtoDVD 3 is a fine and very versatile program. It's interface is a bit confusing but it's new Video Processing/Video Resize options are great and allow a myriad of options regarding picture size, with instant preview. None of the free apps (unless you are versed in AviSynth scripting) have this flexibility. AVStoDVD (free) comes close, but it assumes some knowledge and fiddling with codecs.
