NEC ND1300 fails to write or read DVD -

Have installed an ND1300. It works well with DVD+ but refuses to read or write to DVD- (verbatim Datalife plus). Using Nero the burning dialogue starts then freezes completely, also happens with COSMIC myDVD. I've flashed with latest firmware 1.0A but this did not help either. Nero infotool gives the right info about inserted DVD- disks. If there is a DVD- in the drive and I start COSMIC or Nero, the system sometimes freezes already then. Any suggestions? The vendor wants me to return it for testing but that soon will cost a lot with postage etc so I'd like to try everything possible first.
