How to convert .mkv to play on Sony BDP-S350 with subs

Does anyone know how?

I tried converting an .mkv to AVCHD with RipBot and all is well when I play it on the pc. It also looks fine on the Sony standalone player but I can't get the subtitles to appear. On the pc the subs work.

I think the subs are in the .mkv since there's no .srt file. I found this guide on how to do it with subs but it needs an .srt file which I don't have. Can this only be done with an .srt? I'd like to do it also with those that are encoded within the .mkv.

I'd appreciate someone pointing me to a guide on how to do this because I couldn't find one.
