Hi Friends

I recently tried to install XP on my laptop i received an error message that setup couldn't read the hard drive, also i can't access my EISA Configuration to recover win vista, instead, when i press the key combination i get taken to Boot options in dos. I want to delete the partition but not sure how, Advice would be most appreciated

But if someone knows how i can access the partitions, that would be appreciated too.

Many Thanks

Try a Linux Live CD to access the partitions.
http://www.ubuntu.com/products/WhatIsUbuntu/desktopedition

Make sure you use the LiveCD. You don't need to install it to access your partitions.

Hi core2kid thanks heaps for the advise, i able to access my EISA config partion. from what i could see, all im able to do is to format the partition. just out of couriosity is there a way to copy the partition first, i'd like to know what options i have before i go ahead and start deleting.

Thanks again i appreciate your help & also you have opened up a new window for me, with OS. i'm glad to see i have other options and not just microsoft windows. im thinking of trying to install it on a Virtual PC if i can, and test it out.

Since I don't know the actual configuration of the partition I can't help you much. What I can suggest is to use Acronis to back up the partition, I think they have a boot CD you can use. Other than that, there is no need to format the partition to reinstall XP or Ubuntu, Ubuntu has an option to resize partitions and install on a free partition. Do you think you can post a picture of your partition configuration of what Ubuntu shows? A picture from a cell phone or digital camera is fine, I just need to see the file systems and free space.

Yes. That is enough info.
First things first, you should edit your post and remove your email, its against the rules.
Your first partition at 9.77GB is your recovery partition. You can't really back that up before you delete it, if its gone its gone. Your C: drive and D: drive are drives accessible to Windows. The FileSystem drive on Ubuntu is your virtual drive that you used to boot up Ubuntu, I see that you haven't installed it yet.
If you want to delete the EISA configuration all you need to do is right click on that partition in Windows and click Delete. Your error message of not accessing the hard drive is more likely a problem with SATA drivers. If you want to recover Vista at this point you will probably have to use a boot CD/DVD that came with the computer. What laptop is it?

Gday mate i know this probably sounds lame but i cant find where 2 edit the post, also i have tried to delete other threads i posted because they were in the wrong section, such as this thread i managed to post it in 3 dif catergories b4 i found the right place. sorry mate ive only been using forums & blogs for about 1month now. i have an Acer Extensa 5220 which came preinstalled with vista, they never gave me a recovery disk and they want to charge me $190 for a new image to be put in the EISA Config. this was my first laptop and i never new about recovery partions. these days, times are getting a little tuff, i left my last job about 7months ago to go do a cadetship with dimension data, and they were supposed to find me a job with one of there client for 12months, (on minimum wage by the way, but i didnt care as long as i was able to work in IT, i was willing to do what ever. but as soon as i finished the cadetship this ressesion started and now apparently no one is hiring. i managed to get my MS certifications. i completed 2261C, 2262B, N171MC & Comptia A+, and every job i have applied for personally never even give me the chance of an interview, its always the same excuse that they are looking for some1 with atleast 1yr experience . so if possible i want to recover that partion so i can bring my pc back to its original state i still have 2yrs warrenty on it & when i reinstal with a vista disk i purchased i dont get all the acer features. i got my hands on Hirens BootCD and they have an application to recover bad drives so im not sure how to use it exactly but i might play around with it before i delete the partition. you see my aim is to repair the eisa config if possible & if not then i want to delete the partition and try install XP. when i try install xp now i get an error that xp cant find the hard drives, im assuming thats because of the eisa config.

mate thank you again, i have already troubled you heaps and i understand if you want to call it a day. me personally i will keep at this till i find a solution

Don't worry about troubling me, your not. That's what forums are for.
For editing your post click the notepad icon on the right side of the forum header (Name and title part).

To restore to factory, Try this:
Found the info for anyone needing it from Acer Tech Support.....

1 Ensure all Data is backed up, all data will be deleted.
2 Restart machine
3 When your unit switches back on, wait for the ACER screen then hold down alt & tap f10 repeatedly..
4 Please wait a moment until prompted, -How would you like to restore?-
5 Please select Restore system to factory default-
6 Enter your defined password or enter six zeros 000000
7 Click ok
8 Please wait until process completed, this will take 45min -1hour
Be sure to back up all data installed after you bought the machine, it will be deleted.
If this works out, I can then help you install XP or Ubuntu on it.

good morning mate, i managed to delete my email from the post. god i feal so silly i dont beleive it was that easy lol. with the recovery method of (alt & F10) it doesnt work when i tried it before, i kept taking me to "boot edit menu". but know when i wait for the ACER screen and then hold down alt & tap f10 repeatedly.. nothing happens it just loads up windows as normal. i went into bios to make sure the function is enabled, which it is but it doessnt work. i called acer and they said that i maybe deleted parts of the recovery partion when i formatted and reinstalled win vista of a fresh dvd. but what i dont get is that evereytime i re-installed, i only managed to access 64.3GB which is C & D drives, so im not sure how i could of even touch the recovery partition, so now what im trying to do is create the image of that partition and burn to dvd. is that possible and also i have a few applications to repair damaged partitions and also i got my hangs on a copy of Acronis True Image v11.0 Build 8053 Home, which i hope will be able to back up the eisa config.

at the moment i have managed to backup the PQSERVICE partition which im more then certain it is the EISA Config. it is exactly the same size and is also the first part of the 3partitions i have on my pc. so far so good now im just about to restor it to another HDD and well see what happens then, this is the first time i use acronis true image and between me & u, i thought it would be as simple as creating and image backup which i could burn straight onto a dvd, lol. i was wrong. so know im going to restor the backup to another drive and see what i can use to create an image from it. i mean at the end of the day acer said it was an image file of acer vista oem.
Im not too sure if there is a way to create a recovery dvd on vista, but im sure there will be away to do so, some notebooks you buy come with a standard recovery dvd so i dont see why not. i guess well find out soon.
cheers

hi core2kid, mate i think ive stuffed things up. i used acronis true image to make a backup image of the eisa config, which it did and i saved it to c drive & then i tried to restor the image to d drive. after i finnished and rebooted my system, i now have 2 eisa config's, c drive and 20GB unallocated space. which means i lost my D drive lol. i now know that i can create a copy of my eisa config but how do i burn the image to make it a bootable dvd. i need to make sure that the backup copy of my eisa config works and if it does. i need to format my pc and some how restore the backup, so i can use that backup to run windows of it. im not sure but i wonder if i can use ubuntu to delete all partitions and then add the recovery partition. but then still come the factor of running eisa config, which was my probloem to begin with. i couoldnt get the recovery partition to load when i pressed the hotkeys alt & F10. mate this is getting a little stressful but i like were im at, because im actually doing something i enjoy. lol

hi core2kid i have an update if your still out there :) when i made an image of the partition drive eisa config using acronis trues image, i open up the image and these are the fol ders and file i found inside. if possible do you know how i start a recovery process or installation from them. i am stuck at this point. what i plan to do is, by using ubuntu i will delete all partitions to scratch then install this recovery backup image onto one partition and then recover from there. do u think its possible & if so do u have any advise for me. i feel like after all this work i am half way there, the only thing is when i look at the image or backup i created with acronis. i dont know where to go from there.

What happens when you double click that exe file where you copied and pasted?
What you might have to do is set aside some space on your D: Drive (resize the partition during install) and the Vista recovery partition MAY be accessible with the GRUB bootloader by default installed with Ubuntu. Make sure you know what your doing, one wrong move with GParted Live Partition editing and you've lost data. I suggest you do the manual configuration and resize the partitions. Allocate 5GB to Ubuntu with a mount point of /
You don't need swap space if your just using it for the bootloader.

i tried to double click a few of the exe files to see what will happen. i tried MBRwrWIN.EXE, NAPP.EXE & NAPdect.exe all 3 ran a cmd window for a second then closed and gave me errors which i tried to print scrn but in the middle of it windows shutdown and wouldnt restart, i had to run a Vista setup and repair so i could get windows started. you were right, now im definatly out of my league and with your last post, if its not too much trouble are you able to give me a more step by step instruction. im not sure if your asking me to install ubunta or just to use ubunta to create the partitions. soryy mate now im in no-mans land.

I can't really give you step by step instructions since your partitions will be different than mine. What I want you to do though is install Ubuntu on the D: Drive.
-Boot from CD
-Click Install Ubuntu
-On where to install choose manual for the partition page (your 3rd picture)
-Resize the 3rd partition to have 5GB free space with a file system of EXT3 (i'm pretty sure thats the right format)
-Install on that partition

Let me know if you need help, This is a brief description, I can go more in detail if you want.

Refer to your picture that I edited. Sorry about the caps in it, I thought it'd be easier to read since the picture resolution is so high.

You are not touching the EISA configuration here, You are just attempting to make it accessible and usable.

hi how are you. god dam this site can be slow at times, i didnt get your reply till now, so this morn i started to do what you asked , only coz after i woke up this morn i was a bit more refreshed, i sort of figured it out except for the ubunta bit i still thought it might be 4 XP lol. any how i did similer to what you asked only dif is that i left 14.6GB & formatted in fat32, luckly i havent gone as far as "installing XP". anyways now i just go back to ubunta & fix the size, my pc is pretty quick anyway and follow your step. ill let u know when im done.
cheers!

G?day mate, I need some more help. At the moment I have partitioned the drives, & need to choose a mount, I?m not sure which one to choose. There is / or /boot, /home, /tmp, /usr, /var, /srv, /usr/local. & if I don?t choose one I get an error and won?t let me continue instillation, as I?m sure you already know. Also to see what happens I choose / then when I continued with install, I got the following error
** you have not selected any partitions for use as swap space enabling swap space is recommended so that the system can make better use of the available physical memory & so that it behaves better when physical memory is scarce. You may experience install problems if you do not have enough physical memory.
If you do not go back to the partitioning menu & assign a swap partition, the installation will continue without swap space.***
Not sure which mount to choose & if I should continue without swap space.
ps; i tried to prnt scrn error & save to flash drive, but for some reason it wouldnt let me.

Cheers

Also it won?t let me create a swap partition, I went back to partition editor & resized /dev/sda3 & allowed for 1GB to be free. I thought that way I could create the swap partition and continue installation, but apparently I have 4 primary partitions and that?s the max I can have. I know we are just doing this so I can access EISA Config, but apparently if I continue without a swap partition I might get installation errors.
Should I just continue or should I make /dev/sda3 a secondary partition so I can create the swap partition, and will that work or would I be wasting time.
Thanks
Husskii

28. December 2008 @ 22:26 _ Link to this message    Send private message to this user
i had tried to take a screen shot of my partition but for some reason i couldnt save it, i think last time i had formatted my flash drive with ubunta so it was compatible & that way i was able to save to it, but this time i couldnt even open any of my drives. this time i couldnt because i need to keep what i had on my flash drives. but i went ahead and what i did was i formatted my dev/sda3 to a swap file and made the 5GB dev/sda4 as ext file, and now ubunta is installed and i can load either OS (ubunta or vista). but when i run ubunta, i cant find partition editor, and what drives i formatted for ubunta icant see on vista.
example i only have c:\ drive on vista and nothing else.
am i ready to access the eisa or did i make a mistake somewhere.
also i will try take some shots again and see if i can post.
cheers
