I have a Samsung 50" hdtv that is 1080i. I have a Quad Core computer hooked up to it with a dvi cable that has an hdmi adapter on the end that is plugged into the computer. I've been running with resolution 1440 x (something). I've also ran it at 1920 resolution, but usually don't because it makes it harder to read and more of a strain on my eyes. But it is possible. I am using Windows Media Player for most playback, although I also have Windows Media Classic and VLC installed on the system. I am mainly working with mkv files that are "blu ray rips" and are labeled as 720p that I have found on the internet.

My concern is that when I watch these mkv files, I don't notice the screen "popping out". When I watch them, the colors look nice and clear, and you can see the difference in colors between the dvd and the mkv file I downloaded, but nothing seems to "pop out" as I seem to see on the tv's at the stores. Instead the movies look a lot like regular dvds that I have watched, only better color overall in areas that were a little muted on the dvds.

I'm not sure if I am doing something wrong, not using the video player correctly, or what. I thought that a 1080i tv would be able to play a 720p file correctly, but if this is not so, then please let me know. Also, I havent really tweaked the video players at all, I've just watched them mostly in Windows Media Player. So I wasn't sure if maybe there's something in VLC that I need to tweak, or something along those lines.

Any help is appreciated. I hope people understand what I mean by "pop out". I'm trying to think of another way to describe it, and am coming up a little short.

I know what you mean. You're using 1080i, you usually get that extra "pop out" with 1080p tvs.

I guess I figured 1080i would convert down to 720p and I would still see some of the "pop out" effect.

Personally i don't believe I see any of this effect. I've noticed movies that are a lot clearer and have better color than the dvds, but not the pop out effect I've seen at the stores. Does 720p not do this really?
