Recording cassettes to MP3 - playback problem

Hi thee folks,

bear with me. I'm new and stupid.........

I suffer from tinnitus and one way i get to sleep is to listen to audio cassettes in the background. I have built up quite a big collection of tapes, but have lost a few recently.

Aha thinks I. i can record them onto MP3, burn them to Cd and never lose any again.

Now, I have a crappy saisho cd walkman, which much to my surprise, played aa cd of MP3's i burned. good, so no problems there then. however, I copied the cassettes using Cdex ver 5.1. This made them nto MP3 layer 2. This would not work in my saisho CD player. I had a look at the MP3 CD that it did play and they are encoded as MP3 layer 1. I assume this si the difference.

Now, good people, I ask of you 3 things...

1/Am I right to assume my crappy saisho CD player can handle MP3 layer 1, but not 2?

2/ Can I convert the substantial number of recordings I have encoded in layer 2 back into layer 1 so I can listen to it on my crappy saisho CD player?

3/ If not, after I have finished crying, what MP3 prog should I use to record cassettes into layer 1 MP3?
