My Dell Inspiron 5150 originally came with an intel pentium 4 2.66ghz, 512k L2 cache, 533mhz fsb. The cpu doesnt say anything about being mobile but the specs for it says it is. The numbers on the cpu are SL724 MALAY. I wanted to put in a pentium 4 2.80ghz, 1mb L2 cache, 800mhz fsb(HT). The numbers read SL7E3 MALAY. Both processors look identical besides the numbers. My laptop motherboard supports a hyperthreading cpu. It also supports speeds of up to 3.2ghz. I performed surgery on the laptop and did a transplant. Turned it on and no go. It powered on but didn't post, and then shut off. I aslo tried 3 other cpus i had laying around, 1 which was pulled from another laptop. Still no go. I then put the original cpu in and it booted right up. Am I missing something? I suppose i could understand there being compatability issues possibly with a cpu being mobile or not, but what about the one i pulled from the other laptop? All are socket 478. I'm hoping someone can clear up for me if compatability is the issue or not.
