How to Make a Desktop Wireless?

A friend wants me to give their desktop and wireless connection. I haven't seen the PC yet so I don't know the specs.

How do I tell if it has PCI slots or if it is too old?

Is PCI card the way to go or will a USB adapter work just as good?

Is 802.11 N the way to go or is G fine? I don't think the signal is very close, but I was told a connection can be picked up with a laptop, not sure how strong though.

What kind of card or adapter brand do you recommend?

Can?t imagine any pc being used won't have PCI, PCI 2.1 has been around for 13 years.
I would choose PCI over USB every time, the problems I see with USB stick people use, once swapped out for an internal card, they always work fine.
Steer clear of Belkin, as they tend to force the install of their wireless software and stop user from selecting windows management of wireless, or it tends to screw it up.
Dlink or Netgear would do fine; you shouldn't need to spend more than £20 on a card.
802.11g would be the best to go for, as far as I know there is no ratified spec for 802.11n, so it may be proprietary and will need router and network card to be same make and support.
