Hi there, I've just about pulled all my hair out trying to get this to work, and can't figure it...Here's the deal (buckle up, it's kinda complicated)
I have a modded version 4 fat PS2, modded (not sure which chip). It plays PS1 and 2 originals perfectly, PS2 backups perfectly, but it's iffy on PS1 backups.
It WON'T read old PS1 backups on 650 MB CD-Rs (from when I was playing them on my dearly departed original PS1). That's fine, it's an outdated media, I'll transfer them over to 700 MB CD-Rs.
My PS2 WILL read PS1 backups I've made in the past on 800 MB CD-Rs, but ones I make now just won't work. I've always used Fujifilm brand CD-Rs and they've worked fine, but here's what I notice: old Fuji CD-Rs used to have a green dye on the bottom, now they're more silvery and you can't see the burnt tracks as well...My PS2 won't read these ones! I've read in other parts of this forum that Verbatim CD-Rs are best for playing PS1 backups on PS2...Bought'em, tried'em, won't read'em.
I'm burning them at 4x (slowest my burner can go) in Nero.
Please help, I'm at my wits' end. Is it the type of CD-Rs I'm using (in which case what brands of CD-R still use the greenish dye)? Or am I just doing something completely wrong?
Also, one other question. Do PS1 games have to be .bin and .cue to burn properly? Or can they be .iso too?
And just to update, I took the PS1 games I burned to a friend's house to try them out on his modded original PS1, and they worked like a charm.
Which further leads me to believe that the PS2 just can't read these specific types of discs (Verbatim CD-R). I think they need to have that green-ish/blue-ish dye on the recording layer.
Am I on the right track here? Anyone have any other suggestions or can point me in the direction of a good brand of CD-Rs?
