If Smokyrain sees this thread and responds, I wanted to personally tell you thanks for all the help you have given in these afterdawn forums with the PS2 section (do you cover others as well?).
You have basically given me motivation to dive into console modding with my own PS2 consoles and exploit them to become better machines. ;p

I currently use Swap magic 3.6, and it works great with my backed up games. I just want to learn more about the memory card exploit scene just to expand my overall knowledge:
1) What is the purpose of the exploited memory card? Does it have any advantages over swap magic for example?
2) Besides running homebrew programs, can the exploited memory card run backed up games? If it can, how does it work? Is it as simple as turning on PS2 with the exploited memory card with the game, and just tell it to load?
3) Is there any reason for someone to use exploited memory card, if they have swap magic or mod chip?
4) What is currently the best memory card exploit method? The Free MC Boot installer?
Any other thoughts on the memory card exploit, please share. I am trying to understand so that maybe I can engage in this and also share my own knowledge/experiences. Thanks!
i used swap magic to load fmcb + ulaunch then i got swapmagic.elf on there also. now i load the swapmagic.elf with a high toc origional in the drive, then swap as usual saving my swap magic because i had to purchase it twice because the first was damaged
1)my purpose is to save swap magic disc
2)u can use esr which i believe comes with fmcb it autoboots patched backup games(personally i still use the swap magic method because i did not want to reburn patched backups)u could do both
3)same as above
4)installation (boot installer with swap magic)
I am not familiar with ESR. Using ESR, you will have to patch your games?
I currently have a bunch of backed up games, and I use swap magic. Which memory card exploit do I want to look into that I can do on my own, without having to patch the games?

Thanks, I do have a DS-lite with G6 Real card, PSP with CFW, and a modded Wii. I post a bit in those sections.
You do a fine job yourself rdn99 helping on these forums. **************************************

Free McBoot is a method of running homebrew applications directly off a Memory Card as a stand alone loader. No boot discs or modchips are required once installed.
Yes it does in the sense that you can just load any ELF file right from the Sony Browser, whether you have it on your mc, or on a usb drive
2) Besides running homebrew programs, can the exploited memory card run backed up games? If it can, how does it work? Is it as simple as turning on PS2 with the exploited memory card with the game, and just tell it to load?
Yes using ESR. ESR is an application that gives you the possibility to launch DVD discs patched to DVDV format on unmodded consoles
The backup discs are patched with ESR disc patcher GUI v0.24a
It works the same as Memor32 with memento, but way better compatibility
ESR will play:
DNAS protected games can be played, but you'll have to patch them with proper number first (windip and co.)
DVD9 games patched with Toxic dual layer patcher and ESR disc patcher
There is also a gui version of ESR
http://psx-scene.com/forums/433755-post707.html From what I understand you can even use hdloader patched with ESR disc patcher to actually work like the retail hdloader.
Yes you can just pop in the backup that is patched, and turn on your PS2 and it will load up automatically
There is a fmcb configurator, similar to uLaunch.elf, that you can change how the PS2 starts , etc. 3) Is there any reason for someone to use exploited memory card, if they have swap magic or mod chip?
For most modchips, fmcb 1.8 will not work unless the modchip is disable. Some have to test it first to see if it works with their modchip. The reason being would be to be able to launch elf files from the mc.
Swap Magic is basically the same reason.
YOu can use SM 3.8 elf file to load the backups you don't want to patch.
I have explained the process in this post and down

4) What is currently the best memory card exploit method? The Free MC Boot installer?
Yes this is the best memory card exploit going.

For people who already have so many discs burned to work with Swap Magic you can either reburn them patched with the disc patcher to use with ESR, or you can just use the SM 3.8 ELF
I can buy discs here pretty cheap by the 100's, so they really only cost about .25 cents each
Or for future PS2 backups you can just start using ESR
It is also great for those who run Codebreaker10.elf that is patched for hdloader.
There is a CB_launch.elf made by jimmikaelkael that allows the use once cheats are selected to return you to the Sony Browser and select the program you wish to start, whether it be ESR or HDLOADER.ELF
http://psx-scene.com/forums/ps2-homebrew...o-load-hdl.html On my V14 PS2 I can now play PS1 backups also with fmcb.
I only needed to follow the first part in this thread. I didn't need the Armax 2.2
http://forums.maxconsole.net/showthread.php?t=131438
There is probably more to say, but can't think at the moment, lol.
Oh and any of those games that had such a high TOC that didn't work properly with Swap Magic unless you did a rebuild, work great with ESR
I like the ease of using fmcb 1.8
