Alright, I just got this hard drive from TigerDirect. It's a 1TB Seagate Barracuda. It was intended for internal use but I bought an external casing. Links to both can be found below.

As I said in the title, the write speeds are VERY slow. One 7GB file took well over 20 minutes.

Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

make sure that your USB is setup correctly. The forward usb connectors on the computer sometimes give you usb1 speeds. Also if you are using a 4in1 usb extension, some of them lower the USB speed. That's probably your problem.

You can also try your external on a different computer to check it, if it's still slow it can be a external case being bad. Also if the hard drive has any file corruption that will make it slow. You can do a scandisk to check that.

thanks, solved :)
I plugged the USB into the rear ports of my computer, that kept the speeds steady at where they started. Before, they started at 10 mins and went up to over 120 :s

I also removed a jumper on the usb which limited the speed. I'm not sure if that was a direct fix or what happened, but the drive works fine now :D
