You could always buy a pc and put mac OS X on it... it maybe illegal but its a whole lot cheaper :). you just need compatible hardware :(

Desktop - Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 3.0ghz, 2Gb DDR2-800 Ram, 250gb + 200gb hdd + 500gb external, Ati Radeon 4850 512mb, 430watt Thermaltake PSU, Windows 7 Ultimate x64

It is gonna depend on your budget and what you're looking to do. Every professional graphic arts class/school/job that I know of uses Macs. It's the industry standard. That's the main reason to get a Mac if you're going into the field.

There are great reasons to go with Macs over PCs. Windows Vista is one reason everyone can agree on. Viruses being another. Making creative projects on a Mac just flows so much better. On the consumer end, Joe Shmoe can take his camcorder and still photo camera he got at Best Buy, import the footage into iPhoto and iMovie, make Garageband magic tracks for background filler, and toss them all together quickly and export it to a DVD in iDVD. The Prosumer and pro will do the same except with Aperture/Photoshop, Final Cut, Logic etc. Everything just works together. PCs on the other hand require time messing around with proprietary software from the camera, the still camera, and working in Windows Movie Maker or getting more software for more money.

Sure, you can build a hackintosh if you're looking for a hobby machine. You can never tell what Photoshop patches will require. For example, if you got a hackintosh and for some effed up reason CS4 required the latest version of OS X and the patch Apple released is not safe for hackintoshes, you would be halted by things like this.

You might wanna consider waiting for MacWorld 2009 when they announce a new Mac Mini (hopefully) and get one of them. Minis make great workstations and are the cheapest legit macs on the market.

So is this gonna be a serious investment or just something to do for a few weeks?
