GL2/Wireless Mic No Sound?

First off I hope I found the correct forum for this. If not please point me in the right direction.

I have a friend who bought a GL2 to be compatible with my XL1S for productions we are working on.

I have a couple Audio Technica wirless lapel mics and gave him one to use.

The out on the receiver of the mic is XLR the in on the camera is an 1/8" mini. He went to Radio Shack and bought an adapter for this.

Problem is, when you play back the tapes there is no sound from from the mic. I know video much better then audio but my thought is: the XLR is a balanced line and the stereo mini is not. Wouldn't this keep him from getting sound to the tape? Any ideas how to fix this if it is in fact the problem?

My camera has XLR inputs so I have never had to mess with something like this...
