Some background first - I believe I contracted this during a download off LimeWire. My system shut down on it's own and rebooted and I knew something was seriously wrong. Ad popups started coming up and I had a red Windows Alert in my bottom tray. I thought it was valid and dug the hole deeper. I didn't have a current virus program running. Mcafee had expired and I hadn't installed anything else since I'm careful. (This is the adult computer :o))
So I tried to system restore and found an update after the last system restore point that said "7.02 build 399 installation". I tried to restore to the point prior to that and F-Secure detected FakeAlert and wouldn't allow the restoration.
I ran a complete F-Secure system scan and it detected Win32.Pakes and renamed it, and quarantined it, so I thought. But the red alert didn't go away. I found that my Windows Automatic updates had disabled. Everything slowed to a snails pace, and suddenly when I tried to sign into eBay, I have a new second layer of security screen coming up asking for my credit card and pin. Clearly there was some malware at play.
I know about enough to be dangerous, so did my own research, downloaded a good half dozen allegedly free spy programs which detected alot but wouldn't remove anything, until I got the Malwarebytes installed. That found and deleted several things, so I thought I had it kicked.
But no. I kept getting "There is no default mail client..." and "Internet explorer has encountered an error and must shut down"...even when the website stayed open. They seem to be ploys to reinfect. And the bogus eBay page still comes up.
I have high speed mach 10 cable internet. I'm running XP Service pack3 which I just updated. I reran F-Secure for HOURS and it found Vundo FBW (C:\Windows\system32\atsonpaq.ini) and Stealth File (Master Boot Record) and quarantined both.
Here again, enough to be dangerous...I went looking for this ini file after the quarantine and it was still in the PC so I deleted it manually. I did some reading on system restore infections and disabled that and re-enabled it, creating a new restore point.
I got rid of the default mail client popup by deleting it from the registry and repairing it from outlook.
The red shield warning went away, and automatic updates stayed on.
Looked like I was making progress, however, now what I'm left with is HUGE lags on the internet and I think it has something to do with iexplore.exe. Now I've rebooted so many times just to get online, because it hangs up and won't close the windows, and sysfader pops up during the shut down that it is running. I think I'm a few steps away from frying my system and I desperately appeal for help.
In the thread that describes what to do, I did the ATF cleaner, Kaspersky wouldn't run. I tried 3 times and it said there was an invalid signature. It didn't prompt to install the active x. Again it's Windows XP 2000 Service pack 3 which was just updated. I rebooted, and I ran the Hijack log which follows:
