How to strip video from Sky+ hard disc

My family have gone over to Virgin+ so they have videos recorded on their Sky+ 160Gb hard disc. I have removed the hard disc and installed it in my computer, it reads the files OK but won't or does not recognize the file extension.
Any advice would be greatfully accepted.
