Hello Afterdawn members,

My problem is that my PS2 will not read PS2 cd games. I recently purchased the game Micro Machines V4 and it will not play.

I am familiar with backing up PS2 dvd games (on dvd media) and I have also backed PS2 cd games on cd media. The methods I have used successfully are DVD Decryptor and Clone CD. And I play my backups with Swap Magic/flip top combo.

So I was wondering if there is a way to backup a PS2 cd game onto a dvd, and would the Swap Magic dvd disk be able to get it to boot up?

I have tried researching this topic extensively, and the closest I've come to info. relating to my problem is how to backup dvd games onto cd's.

Can someone please help me? I love playing this game and I don't want to have to buy a new (used) PS2.

Thank you,

Jeff11103

You could try what I tried, which is using ISOBuster to remove the insides of the CD (don't close ISOBuster), then DVD Scanlite to convert the CD into DVD format, and then Nero Burning Rom to burn the DVD-ified CD onto a DVD disc UDF/ISO (dragging and dropping the files in the same order that ISOBuster originally showed/shows you), that may work, although it didn't work for me. =P

The guide is here if you need it

Another method is here, and a long topic on successful conversions.

@ AuraDrago

Which game did you try to convert

Thanks for the great info. guys!

I downloaded and installed Isobuster, Nero, and DVD Scanlite. But now I have a new problem. My DVD drive doesn't read the game I'm trying to copy.

I put the game in my dvd-rom drive and then I start Isobuster. After Isobuster has started up, it shows no media present.

Now I havn't backed up any games in any way since 2005. I remember before I could use DVD Decryptor I needed to install proper ASPI layers. Since then I have had my hard drive wiped clean and Windows and everthing restored back to how it was when I first got it. After doing that I didn't install those ASPI layers again because I havn't needed to use DVD Decryptor.

Hmmm...now I'm wondering if my dvd-rom even has the proper drivers. The reason I think that is because when I had my computer restored, it wasn't done using any restoration disks that came with the CPU. I had taken my CPU in to have it serviced because it was bogged down with malware. The guy told me that the best way to fix the problem was to restore the CPU, I agreed to having him do that and he went about doing that. Long story short...my cpu comes back with an unauthorized copy of Windows XP Professional. It started out with Windows XP Home with the registration key. This was the second cpu repairman I had taken my cpu to during the life of the cpu. The thing is though, the first repairman wiped my hd clean and installed an authentic copy of Windows without using any of the restoration disks that came with the computer (I even asked him if he needed them). So I never thought to mention having the restoration disks to the 2nd repairman, and he never asked if I had any. So I am currently running on an unauthorized copy of Windows XP Prof.

Sorry this is so long. Any idea why my dvd drive can't read the game?

Thats sucks about your Windows Xp, I guess you can't trust all repairman. Specially when you had a legitimate installation.

Does Nero recognize your Drive, when you have the Game in?

Can your drive read any discs?

Does your DVD drive make funky noises when you insert a disc? If so than you DVD drive is busted, if not than possibly your Drivers aren't up to par with it and you need to get some kind of software, not sure what kind of software though.

Did you try getting and installing Force ASPI?

EDIT: Oh yeah, you should use Nero or a similar program to extract the image, and THEN IsoBuster to crack open the image and reveal the chewy insides.

Nero does not recognize the game when it's in the drive. Just as a test I inserted a cd-r and a dvd-r, both with data on them, and the drive was able to read both.

Yes the drive makes noise when the game is in the drive. It's not a good noise, and sounds like the drive is having a heart attack.

I will try the force aspi next. I won't be able to try that for several hours as I have to leave my apt., but I'll let you all know if it makes any difference.

One again many thanks.

I've been working on installing Force ASPI. So far I've only had limited success. I got the appropriate files in the \system32 folder, but I can't get wowpost.exe and winaspi.dll in the \system folder.

I found info. describing how to rename the files and manually installing them, and I've tried that but it's not working.

I remember this happening the first time I had to install Force ASPI. Only that time it worked.

Mayby I'm renaming the file the wrong way or I'm trying to rename the wrong file...I don't know. When I copy the renamed files to the \system folder, they show up as wowpost.exe and winaspi.dll. But when I double click on the file a window will open up asking me "what program would you like to open 'wowpost.exe.ex_'". It still retains the ex_.

I think when I did this years ago I didn't have to rename those files. Instead I just copyied them into the \system folder. The reason I didn't rename them was because they already had the correct file extensions.

Any ideas?

Ok, disregard the last post. I now have all 4 ASPI drives installed.

Unfortunately that did not solve the problem.

I don't know what to do next. All I can think of trying is to see if the game will play on another PS2. The game looks to be in great condition, but until I see it getting read by something I won't know for sure if the game is somehow ruined.

In the mean time, can you guys think of any other reasons my drive won't read the game?

Well for your PS2, have you cleaned the laser lens, It may then read the CD amd maybe not.

As for your pc, I would just buy a new burner. They aren't really expensive any more.
It will read disks you say, but if it read PS2 games at one time, it still should if it was it was ok.

Of course, you could always download the ISO seeing as how you own the game so it would be legal, then just burn it as usual.

Well you're not gonna believe this but I tested the game out on my friends PS2 Slim, that he purchased from Gamestop two weeks ago (refurbished), and the game didn't play on that either.

I just got the game off ebay so I'm going to return it to the seller. Never had to do that. I hope it won't be a headache.

That's a good idea too AuraDrago. I've never tried downloading any ISOs off the internet so I don't know where would be a good place to get it. Please don't interpret that last sentence as a request for a place to get ISOs, as I'm pretty sure the moderators don't like such things. I'm just saying I'd have to first figure out how to do that which I imagine shouldn't be too difficult.

Anyway, thanks again guys for all you're help. If the seller can replace the game with one that works, I'll still back it up on DVD so it's easier for the PS2 laser to read.
