I am ripping my DVD's to HDD to play through a Media Server. I have no trouble ripping DVD's to digital files. I would like some advice on the best format to save the ripped file in from a quality perspective (i.e. MPEG2, AVI, Divx, etc.). Also, in your opinion, what is the best quality software (free or paid) that provides the best quality output for this format. Thanks for any help that can be given.

Native MPEG format will be BEST. Anything else (compression) will introduce loss.

That having been said, one of the compression techniques may be acceptable to you. However, your question asked for the "best".

Thanks. As a newbie I guess I do not understand the difference between "native MPEG" and MPEG2. What is the difference?
Thanks

None. By "native" I mean an un-altered or un-transcoded backup. I should have more correctly stated "native MPEG-2".

I assume that "untranscoded" means not using the transcoding process to go from MPEG2 to AVI, DiVX, etc.? When I use a program like DVDCopy to convert DVD files to MPEG2 is that transcoding? Finally, is there quality variation amongst the "rippers" that would make you reccommend some rippers over others? What are the ones providing the best quality (free or paid). Thanks so much for all of your help.

Encoding way better than transcoding (quality wise)
