I got a Samsung A550 and hooked it up to coax for cable tv. But I can't watch ANYTHING in HD. Some tv channels even say its in HD but its not. Tv listings gave me channels in HD but I can't see it in HD. I must be doing something wrong because my room mate last year was able to watch football games in HD with the same cable provider through coax.

Is there some sort of setting or procedure to "turn on" hd? It is weird because when I hook up my xbox 360, everything is fine.

You need a HD cable box in order to watch HD broadcasts.
Some stations will say "shown in HD" or something to that effect, but you will not get the HD version of that program.

Are you sure your friend wasn't using a HDTV antenna to get "over the air" HD broadcasts?

Your xbox is outputting at 480p or 720p depending on how you have it hooked up.
Thats why your getting a much cleaner picture with you xbox.

When I connected my 1-day owned A550 straight from the cable wall outlet I got HD with local channels. They are numbered as an example 2.1 for ABC, 6.1 (CBS), 8.1 NBC, 10.1, 10.2 PBS. Otherwise you won't get the scrambled one in HD. It will be the same thing if using an OTA (based on my experience) Best way to go is get an HD cable box.

But I don't even get Local channels in HD... What do you mean by the channel numberings?

I thought the A550 was HD ready and didn't need one of those boxes T_T

Did you run a scan?
Inorder to get HD you need an OTA or HD cable box and programming.
Since your tv has a QAM tuner connecting it straight to the wall outlet should give you local channels in both standard and HD. The numbering system in my area is ABC = 2, 2.1(HD), 6, 6.1(HD), etc.

The .1 .2 are the digital channels.
It's what the built in QAM tuner picks up from your cable.

J-F-C!!!!!!! Are you even trying to read what the people are posting?????

Look at your remote control. It has a . or a - button.

Now, press 2, then - (or .,) then 1 to get channel 2.1 or 2-1 (on Toshiba sets).

That is the subchannel carrying the HD broadcast.

It may Not be channe l 2 in your area. The one that usually has an HD subchannel is your local PBS station. Can you find that????

Try the station plus the . (or -) and then a 1.

You need to bypass the cable box. Take a coax cable directly from the wall outlet to the RF antenna IN connection on the TV. Then run a scan. The TV should find all analog (if any), and unscrambled (local TV stations)digital channels (if it has a QAM receiver). If your cable provider is like most others it may have analog local channels along with the digital local channels, so you will find your local ABC/CBS/NBC/PBS channel 4 and 4.1 (4-1), and maybe even a 4.2. If your local station has HD programs they will be on the n.1 channel. You will see the same program in SD on the single channel number. I hide, or delete these duplicate channels so that while stepping up or down on the remote they will be skipped, as there is no reason to watch them.

Ya, my tv has a QAM tuner and i connected with the coaxial cord directly from the wall. But when i enter for example 4-1, the channel doesn't change, and instead, it stays on whatever channel I was on before.

I tried different things like a -2, -3, etc, but this TV seems to only like whole numbers. I also checked to make sure the programming was offered in HD with yahoo tv's schedule.

And you did a channel scan? If your local (ABC/CBS/NBC/FOX) channel numbers aren't 'mapped' to the same number for digital (example 4.1, or 4-1, for channel 4) then they may be mapped somewhere else. Try just stepping through all of the channels using the channel up/down button on the remote.

Also, what is your cable programming plan exactly?
