Successful burn - but dvd is blank!?

I've been burning HD video in .mkv format onto DVDs for a while. I burn them as data, as I view them via my computer and only want to store them on DVDs to clear space on my hard drive. I'm not looking for a way to convert them.

That said, I've been getting some videos that are too big to fit on one DVD. I use mkvmerge to split the video into multiple files, and it works great. The problem occurs when I try to burn those split files to DVDs. The "first" one never works. Nero says the burn was fine, and I even use data verification after the burn, and it never has any error, but the DVD always shows up as blank when I pop it back in to load the video. The rest of the files (2nd and 3rd chunks if it was big enough to need 3 disks) burn perfectly and I can load them up like normal.

What is the deal wth the first file not working? I've only tried this with two different videos, but both times the first segment yielded a seemingly blank disk while the others worked fine. I even reburned the first files of both videos - same results again!

Anybody have a clue what's going on?
