Sony HDD dcr sr42 editing software

I bought the Sony HDD dcr sr42 handicam. It didn't come with software, which I understand is useless anyway. Windows movie maker won't even recognize the oddball mpeg format at all. Nero and WinDVD will import the clips but not the audio.

Has anyone found software to edit the mpeg files? I didn't want to have to deal with the hassle and quality loss of converting it, but if that's the only option, then I guess that beats a 500$ paper weight.

I'm running XP, but even my mac won't work with it.
